Chapter 234 Illusion
"This history...is over."
“…Is that so? I see. It seems that’s the case.”
Not long ago, Lin learned about the history of the Overlappers... Overall, it is a story about a civilization located in the Collapsed Void encountering the 'suicidal' Midgard.
Its suicide has led to many impacts, but there are also many unknowns.
For example, what is the relationship between the collapse of the void and Midgard... I'm not sure yet.
Finally, the small pipe took the cubs with the memories of the overlappers away and came to the normal void, and then they found some... relics left behind by overlappers a long time ago.
It is not clear what happened afterwards. It is probably that this small pipe placed these cubs in the ruins.
Then they were ignored and the cubs never woke up.
As for where the little pipe went after dropping the cub off...it was also unclear.
What Lin cares more about is what happens in these spaces afterwards.
That is, the spaces that were shattered by the collapsing void.
These spaces are used by investigators to record events related to Midgard.
All the illusions of the past that Lin is seeing now are actually created by the investigators.
Of course, the illusion itself was not created by the investigator, but something that already existed in the space.
But it is the investigators who "clarify" these illusions and use them on a large scale.
At that time, the investigators mainly used illusions to record the entire process of the Midgard Project, and distributed these recorded illusions into dozens of spaces.
According to the investigators' settings, these illusions can be easily seen by entering these spaces, so that all creatures can know the "failure" of Midgard.
But many of the spatial illusions that Lin saw now were not related to the records of the Midgard Project, but were of a very rich variety.
For example, this ruins with little pipe cubs, where you can see various illusions of overlappers.
These overlapper visions are special because they occur in multiple time periods simultaneously.
To be precise, their era is 'mixed'.
Because Lin had been observing them here for a while, she discovered that they were in the earliest and most prosperous period of the collapse of the void... they were also in the period of going into space to experience, the period of war with the small pipes, and of course the final period of the end of the war.
What Lin saw when she first came to the ruins was them fighting with the small pipes.
And later, illusions from other periods appeared here... It's not that different eras are played here at intervals, but that these eras are mixed together.
For example, the appearance of the Overlappers that are at war with the Small Pipes will suddenly change into the earliest Overlappers, while the Small Pipes that are attacking them will not change. The Small Pipes will continue to attack them, and the Overlappers themselves will be at a loss because of the change.
Lin thinks this mixture is very interesting and has something special about it.
That is the illusion of being able to see a group of overlappers who are in their final period.
These overlapper illusions are very special. They know very well that this is a relic and that there is a group of little pipe cubs with their own thoughts buried here.
And they are also well aware that these pups represent the latest generation of overlappers.
All the overlappers from past eras have perished, including themselves, of course. They know that they are just illusions and cannot affect 'reality'.
So they have been waiting here for someone to wake up these cubs.
For this reason, they have been fighting against the ever-changing times around them.
Countless things have happened to the Overlappers from ancient times to the present, and in this illusion that is a mixture of all eras... it is very difficult for them to survive.
But they did it.
At least it held on until... Lin discovered that here, Lin could understand the entire history of the overlappers, mainly from this group of special illusions.
Now there are only a few of these particular phantoms left, and they indicate that they are having a hard time holding on any longer.
Many creatures have come here before, but most of them did not have the sensory organs or technology to detect them.
They knew whether creatures could see them or not, so when they found Lin and Sharin, they decided to let Lin wake up the cubs.
It’s not that they think Lin is trustworthy, but if they miss this opportunity, they may never have another chance.
But what Lin is more concerned about is how these illusions here became like this?
Why are there various mixed eras shown, and why are there such a group of phantoms who know their current situation?
Apart from these particular visions, the others seemed to be living in their own time, unaware of what other things were like.
Lin also asked the special illusions about this matter, but in fact they themselves didn't know.
They said they had memories of 'visions of different times'.
They have been overlappers of the earliest era, as well as various eras in between, and their appearance would change at that time depending on the roles they played.
At some point, they suddenly woke up and knew the overall course of events, and they haven't changed since.
Of course, the other illusions around them are still constantly changing, which may... kill them.
Lin felt that these special illusions could be considered living beings.
They have their own thoughts and ideas. What's special about them is that they can only come into contact with other illusions and cannot come into contact with anything in the normal void, although they can 'see' things in the normal void.
Why did such a strange illusion occur?
And...what exactly is an illusion?
It feels somewhat similar to the energy in dreams, and you need to adjust your 'cognition' in order to see them.
But we still know very little about them, and Lin is not sure how they were formed.
In short, it should have a deep relationship with Midgard.
Moreover, Lin felt that the Midgard plan was not necessarily a failure.
It seems like the investigator's subsequent actions may have been "set".
Lin thought that there might be interesting things to discover if she continued to investigate these spaces.
Then there is the illusion of Sharin's clone. Lin thinks that maybe the illusion of the clone is the same as the illusions of these overlappers.
It itself may not really be in the past, but rather a 'phantom creature' that... feels it is in the past.
Sharin felt that this was also possible, that these illusions underwent some miraculous transformation and became living beings.
But it also feels there is another possibility.
That is, its doppelganger may be stuck in the past and the present at the same time.
