Chapter 560 The Destroyed Town
The Titanium fell to the ground, with a neat cut on his chest. A heavy object had chopped him in half with one blow, leaving him on the ground with his stomach ripped open. His intestines and lungs flowed out of the gap in his abdomen.
Vito raised his head and looked at the collapsed building on the side. It used to be a good-looking store, but now only bricks and ruins were left. The goods that were once displayed in it fell in the rubble. A doll sat alone on the broken stone, looking at Vito with metal-polished eyes.
He glanced at the collapsed buildings on both sides. The whole town had become a ruin. The once bustling streets were now only deserted, dead and destroyed.
Vito crossed the ruined street and stepped over the Titanium lying under the eaves around him. He crossed the street, bent down and drilled through a collapsed pillar, and came to the central square of the entire town. It should have been bustling here, with vendors setting up stalls everywhere, selling goods from all over.
But now, it is empty. The shops that were here at that time were crushed under the stones. The roof fabric was torn and scattered on the ground, and the broken bricks and tiles were pressed on top. There were also the goods that were once sold there.
Vito walked up to the square and bent down in front of a stall. He picked up a doll, a pony doll, with one leg broken and only one of the two button eyes left.
It must have been sold to a little girl, but now, the girl can no longer get him, and everything that once belonged to their future owner was crushed under the rubble.
"My lord."
Gavier's voice sounded behind him, and Vito turned his head slightly towards him, "Did you find anything?"
"No, nothing, there is nothing left here." Gavier said as he walked up. He walked into a ruined street in the square. There, as Vito had seen before, only broken walls were left.
Sesos followed Gavier, but Vito didn't find anything worth mentioning from his face. He put the doll on the only intact table, then stood up and looked around.
The sound of the wind passed through the ruins, whistling between the broken walls, as if it was singing for the dead here.
"The Tau troops have been here, but they didn't stay for long. We saw the remnants of the jet ship in an open space." Gavier said, looking around at the ruins that looked the same. During the long years of war, Gavier went to many places and saw many different ruins, but found that they were all the same.
No matter how magnificent they were before, after that, they would only have the same thing left, like a tombstone, silently telling the former glory and the current desolation of this place.
"Who do you think did it?" Gavier asked softly, his voice as light as the wind around him.
"At least it's not the Astra Militarum." Vito said, looking at the fallen battle suit mech in the square next to him. He was covered with bullet holes and explosion gaps, like an exhausted warrior who fell in the ruins, half of his body was buried underneath.
Gavier also stared at the battle suit mech. There was a big hole in his chest, as if pierced by a spear. "You're right, the Astra Militarum can never do it."
"The Tau people once fought hard to stop the invaders, using everything they could find."
"But it wasn't enough. The invaders broke their defenses, killed their soldiers, knocked down the battle suits, and crushed the civilians." Vito said, "Can you contact Sicarius?"
"No, he's missing. Sessus and I tried to contact him or find him, but we found nothing." Gavier replied with a sigh.
"Perhaps, he has also fallen somewhere, or is buried under some ruins." "I believe he is still alive. We experienced the Tyranid invasion of Breechesgra together. He survived then and now."
Gavier and Sessos wanted to refute him, but in the end, no one spoke. They just followed him silently, walking through the square, looking for clues that no longer existed and evidence of the destroyer here.
The city of the Titanium is now almost completely destroyed. The invaders were merciless. They set fire to the buildings on the street, letting the fire spread between the buildings, burning everything in them, including people.
When Gavier passed by a door, a charred hand fell at the door. Its lower half remained in the house, and it was difficult to distinguish it from the surrounding things. Everything there turned charred.
On the street outside the house, a large number of human-shaped sculptures were scattered on the street. They ran from the alley, but were all wrapped in a layer of charcoal, like statues frozen in their last action. They tried to escape, but failed. The flames caught up with them and burned their bodies, leaving only shadow-like bodies standing one after another in the street.
The breeze blew over them, bringing black dust dancing with the wind.
"Who did it? The whole town was massacred, and an Astartes with outstanding martial arts skills disappeared." Gavier frowned, "I fought with Sicarius and know how powerful he is."
"Does this make you understand?" Vito said, squatting on the ground. He swept away the ashes of the fire and picked up something from the ground. It was a shell, which was thicker than ordinary bullets, and even his hands could not contain it.
"Explosive bomb." Thesos, who had been silent, spoke.
Gavier frowned, "It's a Space Marine, but who?"
When he asked, Vito handed the shell to Gavier, who took the bullet and blew away the dust on it, and saw the symbol below, a winged sword.
"Dark Angels." He answered softly, and Vito nodded, indicating that he was right.
"Dark Angels destroyed this place? This must have required a lot of troops." Thesos spoke again, observing the ruins around him. This was a large-scale attack. The entire town was attacked from all directions almost at the same time, so the Tau people failed to react and were eventually slaughtered.
"A company, maybe more." Vito sighed and crossed his arms, thinking about something. Gavier also glanced around, "I have seen the Dark Angels' extermination war. In the Randan War, it was their handiwork."
"Cruel and ruthless, as always." Vito answered approvingly, his eyes seemed to be thinking about something. Gavier and Thesos looked at each other, and then a communication sound came from the helmet tucked under his armpit.
Gavier put it back on his head, and after hearing the words, he looked at Vito, "The battlefield communication has been restored, but there is bad news. The headquarters of the Valhalla Army was attacked and there are no survivors."
"This means we should go back." Vito said, he put down his hand that was supporting his chin, looked around again with thoughts in his eyes, and turned away.
Gavier and Sesos followed him, the wind blew away from them with ashes, and only the doll sat in the wind and sand, looking at them with button eyes.
